In the last decade, there has been an increase in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for decision making in organizations. The World Economic Forum highlighted that AI has cost-saving potential for businesses. By implementing AI, it can bring benefits like increased efficiency, reduced errors, and more accurate results leading to improved strategic outcome.
Researchers emphasized that when humans and AI collaborate effectively, they can achieve collective intelligence that improves decision making. This augmentation can help humans make unbiased judgments, better decisions, greater creativity in task performance, and escape bounded rationality in finding solutions.
When it comes to AI, the most interesting question is not whether humans can beat a machine or vice versa but how the two forms of intelligence can best collaborate and how organizations can contribute to this.

To do this we have invited Phanish Puram, Professor of Strategy & Organization Design at INSEAD and Ruchika Jain, Research Associate at INSEAD, to share their latest research project about ‘Effective Human-AI Work Design for Collaborative Decision Making’.

Phanish Puranam, Professor of Strategy and Organization Design at INSEAD
Phanish’s research in organizational science focuses on how organizations work, and how we can make them work better.
Phanish obtained his PhD at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 2001 and was on the faculty of London Business School till 2012. He has served as the Academic Director for the PhD Program at both London Business School and INSEAD.
Besides publishing his research extensively in peer reviewed journals, Phanish has also written several books. “The Microstructure of Organizations” (Oxford University Press, 2018) offers researchers a new perspective on organization design. Phanish’s books for practitioners include “Corporate Strategy: Tools for analysis and decisions” which is used as a reference in MBA programs around the world.
Ruchika Jain, Research Associate at INSEAD
Ruchika is conducting primary and secondary research in strategic human resources and applications at INSEAD. She is also presently pursuing her PhD at Delhi Technological University. In the past, she has worked in the facilitation of training programs on competency and skill-based training for PSU and private org at all levels, content creating for customized and programs in the organization, designing and conducting assessment centers for the organization. She is an expert in conducting and interpreting psychological tools and has long experience with teaching undergraduate and post-graduate students in management school. Ruchika has worked as Research Associate at INSEAD for 5 years, and earlier she worked as Assistant Professor/Learning and Development at IILM Institute for 5 years.
